In this video I’ll be showing you a couple of ways to save RAM whilst using Kontakt – so do subscribe for more videos like this and ring the bell to keep up to date with our notifications and deals.

Whether you’re using the full version of Kontakt or Kontakt Player, these RAM-saving methods will help you get the most from your system.

Here’s a small project with a few tracks and each has a Kontakt instrument loaded. By default Kontakt will load up all of the samples available for each instrument. You can see how much RAM is being used per track in Kontakt’s top panel, where it says Memory. As you can see, these strings are using a whopping 5 GB of RAM.

Some Kontakt instruments have sample purging built into the interfaces of the instrument itself – which is this case with Cinestrings shown here. I can turn off microphone positions and the RAM usage will drop.

But even using just one mic position is occupying 1.26 GB of RAM – so what if we don’t need all those string samples, just a few?

Navigate to the Kontakt patch’s Purge dropdown arrow and Purge All Samples. This will clear the sample pool and as you play your patch, you’ll see the RAM memory increase, but it will only load the samples that you need.

One more thing – if you’re working with RAM-heavy templates, you can use this method to purge all the samples of all instruments before you save the project. When you reload your template it will load very quickly with an empty sample pool, ready for you to start writing.

So tell us in the comments, what are your most memory-hungry sample libraries and how do you keep your ram usage down?
