Firstly, many musicians make the mistake of not even playing games before they want to write for them. Immerse yourself in the medium, from RPGs to sports sims.

Pay attention to what’s happening with the music as you progress through the game, as the soundtrack will often be adapting to the gameplay.

As a game composer you usually won’t be implementing the audio yourself, but knowing the right language and systems will give you a headstart. Learn the audio aspects of game engines such as Unreal and Unity and study middleware like FMOD and Wwise.

These software companies provide extensive YouTube tutorials on all aspects of their systems, so at least give these a watch. Lastly, become a fan of all types of different music. Just listening to game music is limiting and may box in your creativity.

Knowing a large repertoire of musical genres will help you problem solve, and make it easier for you to write unusual and inspiring music that should wow your clients. What do you think about our suggestions, and what advice would you give to a fledging game composer?
