Now let’s talk about why that should make us think differently about the plugins we’re buying today.
Plugins are in a strange place right now. Small developers are releasing some creative stuff, sometimes faster than the bigger companies and I love that!
But making good plugins with short lived support?…
That changes the question from“Does this sound good?” to “Will I still be able to open this session 5 years from now?”
The Plugin Graveyard Keeps Growing
CamelPhat disappeared. LinPlug stopped development. Sonalksis largely went quiet. Other developers have been acquired, rebranded, or stopped updating products producers had used for years.
Now, some plugins will keep working for years.
The problem comes later when you replace a computer, update your operating system, reopen an old project, or discover the authorization system is gone.
Making Plugins Is The Beginning
After release, developers have to keep up with new versions of macOS and Windows, Apple Silicon, plugin formats like VST3, AU and AAX, DAW updates, licensing systems, installers, and ongoing support.
Camel Audio shows how quickly things can change. Apple acquired the company and made Alchemy part of Logic Pro. Logic users can now replace several older Camel Audio plugins with newer Apple versions, though Apple warns patches may sound different and old automation may not carry over.
That is a good outcome for abandoned software, but it still changed what owning those plugins meant.
Acquisitions Can Change Things
Rebrands can create a softer version of the same situation.
Audified made major changes to its catalog in 2023, simplifying and refocusing its product lineup. Older plugins moved into a legacy portfolio, with some potentially returning later in updated forms.
Triumph, originally developed by Audiofile Engineering, moved to Aurchitect in 2017. By 2019, a business dispute left Triumph and unavailable, with users unsure what would happen next.
Then Zynaptiq acquired Triumph, Myriad, Spectre, Aura, and Loop Editor in 2020, updated them, and brought them back.
That is actually a success story, but think about it from the user’s side. You bought one piece of software and watched its future pass through multiple companies.
Sometimes your plugin survives, other times it doesn’t.
Prepare Yourself
It sucks when it happens, but an abandoned plugin could be sitting inside an album session, client mix, production template, or track you need to revise 3 years later.
Keep your installers. Save serial numbers and license files. Back up presets. Record the plugin version you used. And when something is essential to a finished production, Look at All These Plugins That Disappeared
I would love to see better preservation across the audio industry, where discontinued installers can legally remain accessible after development ends.
Support Is A Feature
The current plugin boom is exciting because developers are trying strange, creative ideas again.
I want more of that. But ownership changes and shifting priorities aren’t just small developer problems. Look at Native Instruments, which entered restructuring before agreeing to be acquired by inMusic, or iZotope, which moved from the Native Instruments group to Boris FX a few months later.
That’s why I think long term support should be one of the things we consider when buying a plugin.
