RV7000 vs RV-9 Questions

Music producers can be funny. We can have 17 3rd party reverbs installed, but the second Reason gets a new stock reverb, and everybody suddenly salivates… A little bit.

Reason users already know RV7000.

It has been sitting in the rack for years, processing everything from drums, lead synths and performing unique convolution tricks, and all the weird Reason stuff  we discovered by accident.

Now that Reason 14 is bringing RV-9 Reverb to the table, that immediately raises a few questions.

Is this the new go to Reason reverb, or is RV7000 still the one you keep reaching for?

After all, if you’ve been using Reason for a while, you probably have a lot of templates and custom patches with the RV7000 baked in.

Instead of making this another dry feature breakdown, I wanted to get a feel for how longtime Reason users are reacting to RV-9. After digging around a bit, I noticed a few concerns coming up more than once, and those concerns became the questions for this post.

5 Questions Reason Users May Have About RV-9 Reverb Station

For many Reason users, the first reaction is probably, “Yay, new device!” But if you haven’t tested RV-9 yet, or you’re not part of the beta crew, a few questions are still sitting there

1. Does the RV-9 replace the RV7000, or sit beside it?

Because RV7000 is already baked into many old projects, patches, Combinators, and habits. RV-9 may become the shiny new default, but RV7000 still has history, character, and a reason to stay in the rack.

2. Does RV-9 sound cleaner, bigger, or just newer?

A new reverb is cool, but the real question is if RV-9 gives more depth, width, and polish, or if it mostly feels like a workflow refresh with a prettier face. The shimmer looks cool, but everything else kind of looks the same.

3. Is there anything under the hood??

RV7000 had soft menus and the Remote Programmer section for deeper controls. RV-9 looks more front-panel focused, which may be the point. Maybe Reason Studios made it easier to use. But I’d still want to know if deeper controls are hiding somewhere, or if what we see is what we get.

4. What’s the purpose of RV-9?

Besides looking pretty, what is RV-9 actually bringing to the rack? Is it supposed to make reverb faster, better sounding? What’s the rub here?

5. What does RV7000 still do better?

RV-9 may be newer, but RV7000 has character, reverse patches, convolution tricks, and that classic Reason sound. The only thing I’m seeing is Shimmer and Spectral. Those could be interesting.

In The End

I’m interested in seeing what the RV-9 offers and how it sounds.

If it gives a better workflow and sound, I can see it being extremely useful. If not, it might sit collecting dust in the rack like some of the Reason players.
