The English Harpsichord library features an instrument built by Jacob Kirckman in 1766. The Kirckman harpsichords are sought-after for their refined and elegant sound. The instrument was part of the "Beurmann collection" of musicologist Andreas E. Beurmann (1928-2016) who had seven Kirckman harpsichords in his collection, this instrument being his favorite.
With its many registers, it offers lots of sounds. We sampled 6 variants, including the upper 8', lower 8' (principal 8'), both 8' together, the 4' register, the lute stop as well as the nasale stop only available with Kirckman instruments.
Each stop was sampled with 4 to 8 round robin notes per key (to avoid the "machine gun"-like sounds when repeating samples). This makes trills and fast playing sound musical and smooth.
The key release sounds are also very important for the acoustic impression of the instrument. They were recorded with 4 round robin samples per key.
In total, the library contains over 3,600 samples, originally recorded at 192 kHz/24 bit and downsampled to 44.1 kHz.
Presets are included for Native Instruments™ Kontakt® (full version required) in its original meantone temperament at 402 Hz, as well as presets at 440 Hz.
Additionally, the library contains a German essay by Andreas Beurmann, describing the history of the instrument.
