OVERVIEW

TRANSFORM YOUR SOUND WITH MATHAUDIO'S MICROPHONE EQ
MathAudio Microphone EQ box shot min

Unlock the true potential of your microphones with MathAudio Microphone EQ VST/AU, a powerful plugin designed to perfect your audio capture. Whether you're recording vocals, matching microphones for stereo, or seeking to enhance clarity, Microphone EQ helps you achieve professional-grade sound quality by precisely correcting your microphone's frequency response.

What is Microphone Frequency Response and Why Correct It?

Microphone frequency response describes how sensitive a microphone is to different sound frequencies. It's a critical factor in a microphone's characteristic sound. While some microphones have a relatively "flat" response, equally sensitive across frequencies, others have a "coloured" or "shaped" response with peaks and valleys that accentuate certain frequencies. These variations are shown graphically on a frequency response chart, plotting frequency (Hz) on the X-axis against relative sensitivity (dB) on the Y-axis.

Even high-quality microphones can have subtle peaks (resonances) and dips (antiresonances) in their frequency response, or may not perfectly match the ideal frequency response for a specific application or desired sound signature. This is where MathAudio Microphone EQ comes in. It analyzes your microphone's response and applies a correction algorithm to linearize the frequency response, making it flatter or transforming it to match the sound of another microphone.

Key Features and Benefits:

  • Linearize Frequency Response: Remove unwanted peaks and dips in your microphone's frequency response to achieve a more neutral or "flat" sound. This helps in accurately recreating the sound source.
  • Microphone Matching: Transform the sound of your microphone to match the sound of a reference microphone. This is particularly useful for consistency between takes or replicating a desired microphone's character.
  • Matched Stereo Pairs: Convert two identical microphones into a precisely matched pair for high-quality stereo recordings, eliminating timbre anomalies and improving stereo imaging that can result from slight differences between mics.
  • Calibration File Support: Utilize calibration files for measurement microphones to transform their sound into that of an ideal, flat reference microphone.
  • Suitable for Real-Time Applications: The plugin is designed for use in live situations or recording sessions where low latency is crucial.
  • High-Resolution Audio: Supports a full range of sample rates from 44.056 kHz up to 384 kHz without resampling, preserving audio quality.
  • 64-bit Processing: Applies a 64-bit signal path throughout for superior processing precision.

How it Works:

MathAudio Microphone EQ is a self-learning system that compares the signal of your target microphone (the one you want to correct) with the signal of a reference microphone. By analyzing the spectral differences, it generates a mathematical algorithm to modify the target microphone's signal to sound like the reference.

You can generate the correction file using two methods:

  1. Direct Method: Connect both your target and reference microphones to your sound card simultaneously. Use the plugin within your VST/AU host software, speak or sing into the microphones for about 10 seconds, and the plugin automatically generates the correction algorithm.
  2. Postponed Method: Record a short stereo WAV file with your target mic on one channel and the reference mic on the other. Later, open this file in your host software, insert the plugin, and generate the correction file from the recorded sound.

After the automatic correction, you can even manually adjust the frequency response curve within the plugin editor to further fine-tune the sound to your preference.

Applications:

  • Studio Recording: Achieve a consistent and optimized sound for vocals and instruments by correcting microphone responses and matching different mics.
  • Voiceover & Streaming: Improve the clarity and presence of your voice by correcting frequency issues and reducing handling noise or rumble. Some users find EQing essential for sounding professional.
  • Live Sound: Use in real-time applications to tailor microphone responses for specific instruments or voices on stage, enhancing gain-before-feedback and speech intelligibility.
  • Podcast Production: Ensure consistent vocal tone across different recording sessions or microphones.

Compatibility:

MathAudio Microphone EQ is available as a VST and Audio Unit (AU) plugin. It works with Windows 7 or later (x32 and x64) and macOS 10.9 or later (x64 Intel & Apple Silicon). VST plugins are compatible with various host software (DAWs).

Experience the dramatic improvement in clarity, balance, and soundstage that comes from precise microphone correction.
